This course will apply a global lens to Appalachia’s historical and economic development, drawing comparisons between the region and other socioeconomically disadvantaged regions of the world, particularly global mountain regions. Special attention will be paid to Appalachia’s historical place as a source of raw materials for more industrialized parts of the country and how the decline of extractive industries has affected Appalachian communities over the last several decades. The course will also cover (mis)perceptions of Appalachia, environmental and ecological issues in the region, and the emergence of social movements in Appalachia and other marginalized regions.
